What is LVD?

The LVD test (Low Voltage Directive Test) is a test that confirms the compliance of CE marked devices with the CE marking criteria. It guarantees the safety of devices powered by electrical energy.

LVD testing aims to ensure the safety of electrical and electronic products with an input or output voltage within a certain range and benefits fully from the single market. It comprises of 11 safety objectives, and addresses all risks from using electrical equipment, including electrical, mechanical and chemical hazards. It also covers health risks associated with noise, vibration and ergonomic factors. It was brought into force by the European Commission on 20 April 2016 and applies to all member states.

What does the Low Voltage Directive cover?

Generally speaking, the Low Voltage Directive applies to devices and their power supply units that can be plugged into the power socket. Hence, it covers both consumer electronics and AC adapters.

About the low voltage directive (LVD) covers health and safety risks in electrical equipment, including input or output voltage.

  • 50 and 1000 V for alternating current
  • 75 and 1500 V for direct current

And it Applies to a wide range of electrical devices for both consumer and professional use, such as:

  • Electrical appliances
  • Lighting equipment
  • Electrical cables
  • Power Supply Units
  • Laser equipment
  • Components
  • Electrical toys
