What is RED?

The EU’s Radio Equipment Directive (RED) was introduced in 2016 to establish manufacturing standards for radio products relating to their health and safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and efficient use of the radio spectrum.

Manufacturers and distributors of radio equipment who wish to sell to the EU’s 500 million consumers must prove their compliance by affixing a RED CE mark to their products. It also provides the basis for further regulation governing some additional aspects. These include technical features for the protection of privacy, personal data and against fraud.

The Radio Equipment Directive also provides the basis for further regulation covering aspects such as:

  • Protection of personal data
  • Protection against fraud
  • Interoperability
  • Access to emergency services
  • Compliance of combined radio software and equipment

What is the product scope of RED?

The Radio Equipment Directive covers radio equipment, which the directive defines as an electronic product that either intentionally emits and receives radio waves, or includes an accessory permitting the intentional emission and reception of radio waves for communicative purposes.

It covers most of radio equipments, including the following products:

  • Mobile phones
  • Laptops
  • Radars
  • Broadcasting devices
  • Fitness devices
  • Smartwatches
  • Routers
  • Radio transceivers
  • Devices with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or GPS capabilities

RED CE mark is important. To legally sell these products in the EU and European Economic Area (EEA), manufacturers and distributors must ensure their product displays a CE mark. Failure to do so may result in fines, products being banned and recall.
